Ram Charan

On Saturday, September 30, 2017, renowned global consultant and prolific, best-selling author Ram Charan, Ph.D., will talk with The Mentors Radio host Tom Loarie on Charan’s observations on reshaping markets and organizations before it’s too late.

In this interview, listeners will learn the role of discipline, respect, resilience, credibility and trust. Charan also talks about the five blockages to success, how to detect forces reshaping markets ahead of others, the need for ongoing curiosity, wonder and learning, velocity and cash, Sam Walton’s 10-minute exercise, the CEO as emperor and the twin destroyers ego and narcissism in contrast to Joint planning sessions which are the key to alignment and commitment. Charan predicts that 40 percent of today’s companies will not exist in a meaningful way in just 10 years. Listeners will also learn some of the influencers in Charan’s life. So much packed into this interview!

According to Jack Welch, former chairman of General Electric, “Ram has the rare ability to distill meaningful from meaningless and transfer it in a quiet, effective way without destroying confidences.”

Ivan Seidenberg, former CEO of Verizon concurs, referring to Charan as his “secret weapon.”

Charan is no ordinary consultant. He lives and breathes what he observes and advises to others. As he puts it, “I live out of a suitcase.” He literally lives as a pilgrim, traveling around the world from one assignment or opportunity to another, managing to find time to author more than 25 books, which have sold well over two million copies and been translated into more than 12 languages.

Already with three Wall Street Journal best-sellers, including “Execution,” which he coauthored with former Honeywell CEO Larry Bossidy in 2002, a book that has spent more than 150 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. In addition to books, he has written for publications that include Harvard Business Review, Fortune, BusinessWeek, Time, Chief Executive and USA TODAY.

Ram’s introduction to business came early while working in the family shoe shop in a small town in northern India, where he was raised. He earned an engineering degree in India and soon after took a job in Australia. When his talent for business was discovered, Ram was encouraged to develop it. He earned MBA and doctorate degrees from Harvard Business School, where he graduated with high distinction and was a Baker Scholar, then served on the faculties of Harvard Business School and Northwestern University before pursuing consulting full-time.

“The Mentors” host Tom Loarie first encountered Dr. Charan at a lecture at Northwest, and over the years they developed a friendship.

Ram’s non-stop global travels give him an unparalleled, up-to-date insider view of how economies and leading companies operate. Through keen observation and analysis, he helps business leaders face their toughest challenges in the areas of growth, talent development, corporate governance, and profitability. Even more remarkable, his is a well-earned track-record of unmatched perspicacity, calm candor in the assessing, evaluating and predicting of trends, genuine humility and respect for others, and concise, brilliantly actionable strategy development. His work is backed by diligent research and a relentless, fresh sense of wonder.

Tom Loarie, CEO of BryoLogyx, is one of three rotating CEO hosts of “The Mentors” radio show. His pioneering leadership in the life sciences sector has resulted in more than 20 medical devices brought to market, some of which are life-saving.  The following week, CEO host Ric Brutocao, former president of DACOR and the head of a number of companies over the years will host the show, and CEO host John Phillips, co-owner with his wife, Mary, of one of the largest and most customer-centric stained glass window companies in the industry—Associated Crafts Willet-Hauser, some of whose legacy stained glass are more than a century old, will host the show a week later.
