As CEO and co-founder of Sequenom (SQNM) and the first analyst in biotechnology on Wall Street with Drexel Burnham Lambert and Merrill Lynch, “The Mentors” radio guest Nola Masterson, has plenty to say about the “DNA” that makes a great company. In addition, Masterson has experience in managing her own venture fund, as well as being a Venture Partner in a major European IT and life sciences venture fund, TVM Capital. During her years on the Repros Therapeutics (RPRX) Board she has advised the CEO as Chair of the Board on strategy, finance, operations, and recruitment of the board. Her areas of expertise include medical device, pharmaceuticals, scientific tools, separation processes and diagnostics technology as well as genetic analysis, and she holds a professional director certification from the American College of Corporate Directors, works with BoardWise clients on governance practices, and coaches directors and aspirational directors.
Masterson is currently the managing director of Science Futures Management Company and works as an advisor, board member and investor. She is a member of the Board of Repros Therapeutics and serves as chair of its Compensation Committee and sits on the Audit Committee. She also serves on the Board of Resonance-Medical in Chicago; and Zivo Biosciences, a public company headquartered in Detroit MI. She has served on the Board of Generex Biotechnology Corporation, a Toronto, Canada-based company (NASDAQ: GNBT) focused on the development of drug delivery systems and antigen technologies, and served on the Audit, and Compensation Committee and chaired the Nomination And Governance Committee of the Generex Board. She is a special advisor to several private companies and is chair emeritus of the California Life Science Association Institute, a best-practices and workforce development arm of the Northern California life sciences industry association. Currently she is an Adjunct Professor at University of San Francisco in the School of Business Management, teaching the Business of Biotech. She lectures and writes for the Life Science Foundation.
Ms. Masterson also serves as Chair of the Silicon Valley Chapter Board of the American Diabetes Association, and is co-Chair of the San Francisco Chapter of the Woman’s Corporate Directors.
“The Mentors” radio guest Heather Lerner’s professional background is no less impressive, yet in a radically different field from Masterson’s.
Recognized as one of the “Top 100 Women of Influence in Silicon Valley” by the San Jose Silicon Valley Business Journal in 2011, Heather Lerner went on to receive Commendations from the City of San Jose and the County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors.
Lerner started on the board of the Happy Hollow Foundation in 2002, and became the organization’s first Executive Director in its 50 year history just seven years later. In her leadership role at the Foundation, she partners with the City of San Jose to provide important funding and support for the growth and expansion of Happy Hollow, covering exhibit renovation, events, conservation, the art of puppetry, and education scholarship.
While on the founding board for Los Gatos Youth Theatre, Lerner served two terms on the Kehillah Jewish High School Board of Trustees and now serves on the board of City Lights Theater Company, Save Our Trails, San Jose Rotary and The Silicon Valley Organization (formerly known as the Chamber of Commerce). The common thread in her areas of achievement in leisure and community stem from CSU Chico, 1985-1989, studying Recreation Administration under pioneering professionals in the field. She is an alumni of Community Leadership San Jose, Class of 2011.
A consummate coach, especially to young people, to be their “next best selves,” as she puts it, Lerner and her husband, Andy, have two grown sons, Sam (23) an alum of UCSB and a writer’s assistant in the TV industry in Los Angeles, and Noah (20), who studied at Reed College in Portland, performs in musical theater, and is a licensed Nuclear Reactor Senior Operator.
And, just when you think this group of professional women couldn’t possibly get any more diverse or interesting, there’s the third “The Mentors” radio guest Laura Raynak.
