“After more than 45 years in TV news, I still wouldn’t trade jobs with anyone in the world,” says Spencer Christian of ABC. “I’ve been a news reporter, sportscaster, talk show host and weather forecaster.” Assignments and travels have taken him to all 50 states and five continents. He’s interviewed five U.S. presidents and the most prominent figures in sports, world affairs, the arts, and for him the most memorable, what he calls “ordinary people who have done extraordinary things.” That brilliant journey in broadcasting, taking him from New York and Good Morning America for much of his career, is just part of the story. In a recent book, Spencer reveals what it took to overcome a nearly devastating addiction to gambling, an addiction no one suspected and few knew. He hopes the frank, open and refreshing little book will help others in similar situations. In this interview, host Tom Loarie (whose grandfather was founded what is now the Chicago Sun-Times) interviews guest mentor Spencer Christian for invaluable nuggets of learning and insights into the fast-paced world of TV broadcast news.
